- Retell what happens. What is there at the beginning? Does something arrive or leave?
- Find which amount is unknown. The question may ask about the start, the change or the end.
- Show the relationship, work out the missing amount, then check it in the same story.
Something to notice
Ask the learner to retell a fresh story, identify the unknown amount and explain why their picture or equation fits. A correct numeric answer alone does not establish reading comprehension or mastery of the whole standard.
