- Keep a place for every number you are adding.
- You may join all like units or add manageable pairs first. Both approaches must include every original part.
- Exchange groups of ten ones or ten tens as often as needed; each exchange preserves the total.
Something to notice
Ask the learner to explain why an exchange keeps the same value and connect their own drawing to a written method. Encourage different valid strategies. Untimed typed accuracy with worked models does not establish fluent independent calculation or explanation.
