Let’s understand the idea.

  1. Keep three quantities separate: number of pieces, length of each piece and total length.
  2. Equal lengths laid end to end add to a whole. Multiplication records the number of pieces times the length of each.
  3. Divide a whole length by the number of equal pieces to find one length. Divide by one piece's length to find how many pieces fit.

Something to notice

Ask the learner to identify which answer is a length and which counts pieces, label units and explain how the pieces reconstruct the original whole. Six questions include a planning scaffold; two use numerical responses. Models assume ideal cuts with no material loss and end-to-end lengths without gaps or overlap, as stated in each problem.
