Let’s understand the idea.

  1. Name the quantity first: grams (g) and kilograms (kg) measure mass; liters (L) measure liquid volume.
  2. Use the scale's labeled values and equal intervals. The size of an interval depends on this instrument, not on how tall the drawing looks.
  3. Capacity is the maximum a container can hold. Its current liquid volume may be smaller. For mass, specify whether a container is included.
  4. Estimate with a measured reference or a marked scale, then check the measurement. An estimate is not an exact reading.

Something to notice

Provide real calibrated mass scales and liquid containers; ask the learner to choose the unit, estimate from a reference, measure and explain the reading. Digital drawings do not validate practical measuring or handling. These lessons cover reading, estimation and reference quantities; same-unit arithmetic stories are a separate part of 3.MD.A.2. Unit conversions and geometric container-volume formulas are not required by this Grade 3 expectation.
