Let’s understand the idea.
- Read the multiplication sign in the corner. A cell combines its row header and column header with that operation.
- One more column adds one object to every row. The increase is the row count; one more row adds the column count.
- Explain what happens to the quantities. Examples help us notice a pattern; pairing, regrouping and operation properties explain why it continues for whole numbers.

Read a row and a column, predict a change, then test it. Can you explain why the same change works for a header you have not tried yet? Give a counterexample when a claim does not always hold.
