Half an inch makes a difference
Read lengths between whole-inch marks using equal half inches.

Let’s understand the idea.
- A ruler measures the distance between an object's ends. Its physical edge is not necessarily the zero mark.
- Two halves or four fourths make one inch. The spaces between marks are equal length units; count spaces, not both ends.
- Record each measured object once. A line plot puts one X above each recorded length, and stacks separate X marks for repeated lengths.
- Length labels and object counts answer different questions. Sliding a strip preserves its length; stretching it changes its measurement and calls for a new record.
Something to notice
Observe the learner aligning and using a physical ruler marked in halves/fourths of an inch, recording real objects and constructing a plot. These on-screen rulers are scaled drawings, not physical inches. The API checks exact structured mixed lengths, linked measurement records and graph frequencies; it does not assess physical measuring, handwriting or independent explanations. Endpoints are exactly on marked intervals, without nearest-quarter rounding or general fraction arithmetic. Authored bounds of six inches and eight records are product bounds, not limits of the standard. Completion is practice evidence, not mastery.
