Let’s understand the idea.

  1. Rounding to the nearest 100 means finding the nearest multiple of 100. Locate the original number between neighboring multiples.
  2. Compare the distances. The halfway point divides the interval into two equal distances; in a tie, choose the greater multiple.
  3. A number already on a multiple stays there. A rounded number is an approximate description: the original exact quantity has not changed.

Something to notice

These questions include below/above/at-midpoint cases, exact multiples, zero, rounding through the next hundred/thousand and explanations of why a choice is nearest. Ask learners to identify their own neighboring multiples and midpoint, then explain the relevant place value without the supplied line.
