Let’s understand the idea.

  1. An array has equal rows and aligned columns. Its two factors count rows and columns.
  2. A quarter-turn changes each row into a column and each column into a row. Every object stays in the array.
  3. The factor order can change while the product stays the same. Use a fact you know to help with its reversed multiplication.

Something to notice

Ask the learner to predict the new dimensions before a turn, explain why the total is conserved, and use a known fact in the opposite order without counting every object. Nonsquare and one-row arrays distinguish the product from row/column roles. This lesson addresses commutativity of multiplication; associativity and property-based division strategies need further instruction. Completing these questions does not establish fluency or mastery.
