Let’s understand the idea.

  1. A unit square has sides one chosen length unit long. Its area is one square unit.
  2. Measure a region by covering its surface with equal unit squares, with no gaps or overlaps. Every part must be covered exactly once.
  3. The number of squares gives area in square units. Length units measure sides or boundary distances instead.
  4. Moving the same unit squares changes their arrangement, not the amount of surface they can cover without overlap. Each named-unit example is a separate hypothetical region, not a conversion by relabeling.

Something to notice

Observe physical square-unit covering and the learner's explanation of why gaps, overlaps and unequal tile sizes invalidate a covering. Structured placement checks the same-size given tiles against an exact region; it does not assess cutting tiles, physical measurement or independent drawing. Counting lessons use square cm, m, in, ft and a defined homemade square tile. Screen units are scaled drawings, not actual-size measurements. Area multiplication, decomposition and perimeter receive separate lessons; these mappings do not imply them or establish mastery.
