Let’s understand the idea.

  1. Division can be read as a missing-factor question: which factor makes the known product?
  2. An equals sign compares values. The missing number can be a factor, product, dividend, divisor or quotient, on either side.
  3. Try a whole number in every matching blank. Calculate carefully and check that both sides agree. Never divide by zero.

Something to notice

Ask students to explain why a related multiplication determines a division result, invent matching situations, and justify their substitutions without following an example. These items have unique whole-number solutions; identities with many solutions are excluded. A supplied equation does not establish independent modeling of a word problem. Properties, mixed contexts, fluent strategies and recall require further lessons; checked answers do not establish mastery or educator/learner review.
