Let’s understand the idea.
- Each ribbon is one group of pieces. Keep the same one-meter whole for every group.
- Count the groups and the pieces in each group to find the total number of pieces.
- The pieces keep their size when you combine the lengths; the denominator stays the same.
Something to notice
Ask the learner to point to one meter, then one piece. Can they explain why the number of pieces and the length in meters are different? Ask for a new example without first demonstrating it.
Try it. Change it. Explain it.
Open the lesson to use its pictures and controls. In How it works, connect the picture to the idea. In Play & discover, change the quantities and notice what stays the same. In Your turn, answer questions and use the explanation to check your reasoning.
You can ask for help, draw on the thinking pad, or listen to the question and answer options. Progress distinguishes independent work from work completed with help.
