Let’s understand the idea.
- Read the entire story and its final question. Give every useful quantity a meaning and a unit.
- Some amounts are known. Others depend on quantities you need to find first. Follow those relationships one step at a time.
- To find a starting amount or an earlier change, reason backward through what happened. Keep the original story visible while you do this.
- Two independent calculations may be done in either order before their results are combined. A later step must wait until its needed quantities are ready.
- A letter names a particular quantity. An equation may put that letter on either side of the equals sign; the same relationship still holds.
- Changing an earlier calculation clears later answers that depended on it. Check each unit before using an intermediate number.
