Let’s understand the idea.

  1. A point marks a location, like a place on a map. A segment is a straight path that stops at two endpoints.
  2. A ray starts at one endpoint and keeps going in one direction. A line keeps going in both directions; its arrows are not endpoints.
  3. The corner of a sheet of paper is a right-angle reference. An acute opening is smaller than that corner; an obtuse opening is larger but smaller than a straight opening.
  4. Compare the opening where the rays meet, not the lengths of their drawn arms. Turning the paper corner does not change its right angle.
  5. Parallel lines are different straight lines that never meet, even when extended, like the straight opposite edges of a ruler.
  6. Perpendicular lines meet at a right angle, like two adjoining edges at a paper corner. Tilted lines can be perpendicular too.

Something to notice

Ask the learner to draw a fresh ray and perpendicular line with a straightedge, explain why a tilted square keeps its names, and predict then test folds with paper. Digital construction and preview do not establish unaided physical drawing, folding or fresh transfer. Record those observations separately.

Try it. Change it. Explain it.

Open the lesson to use its pictures and controls. In How it works, connect the picture to the idea. In Play & discover, change the quantities and notice what stays the same. In Your turn, answer questions and use the explanation to check your reasoning.

You can ask for help, draw on the thinking pad, or listen to the question and answer options. Progress distinguishes independent work from work completed with help.
