Let’s understand the idea.
- Keep the original factors and their quantity roles clear.
- Choose place-value parts, a rectangular model or another sound strategy.
- Check whether every part was included exactly once.
- Show your thinking with an equation, a drawing, or a spoken explanation. More than one sound method can work.
- Fluent compact multiplication is a later-grade expectation. Here, focus on correct and explainable strategies.
Something to notice
Invite a written or spoken explanation without giving each next step. Check that the learner preserves both original quantities, names each partial product and its unit, and includes every part once. Note whether each explanation is independent, prompted, or not yet demonstrated; a correct total alone does not show the method. Observe both four-digit-by-one-digit and two-digit-by-two-digit work, then try different inputs on a later day.
Try it. Change it. Explain it.
Open the lesson to use its pictures and controls. In How it works, connect the picture to the idea. In Play & discover, change the quantities and notice what stays the same. In Your turn, answer questions and use the explanation to check your reasoning.
You can ask for help, draw on the thinking pad, or listen to the question and answer options. Progress distinguishes independent work from work completed with help.
