What does “times” compare?

Let’s understand the idea.

  1. A multiplicative comparison tells how many copies of one reference quantity make another quantity. Three times as many means three copies, not three extra objects.
  2. Identify the reference, the compared quantity and the multiplier. Their labels stay attached to their meanings, even when multiplication factors exchange places.
  3. Use a letter for the unknown quantity. The comparison is compared quantity = multiplier × reference quantity. Divide to find an unknown reference or multiplier.
  4. An additive comparison asks how much more. It adds an extra amount in the same unit instead of making that many copies of the reference.
  5. Read the final question before choosing a calculation. Check the answer in the original relationship and name what that number measures.
  6. In the experiment, change the reference or the multiplier. The reference and compared tapes use the same scale. Zero quantities stay visible as zero; multiplying by one keeps the quantity unchanged.

Something to notice

Observe unscaffolded explanations, student-made drawings and unfamiliar contexts. Multiple-answer questions check all valid numerical interpretations or equivalent comparison equations.
