Let’s understand the idea.

  1. Begin with the largest place. Share whole units equally.
  2. Exchange only unshared larger units for ten times as many smaller units, then include the next original digit.
  3. A zero share is still a quotient place. Finish with fewer leftover ones than groups.

Something to notice

Ask what was present before and after an exchange. Can the learner account for every original unit, explain a zero quotient place and distinguish an intermediate leftover from the final remainder?

Try it. Change it. Explain it.

Open the lesson to use its pictures and controls. In How it works, connect the picture to the idea. In Play & discover, change the quantities and notice what stays the same. In Your turn, answer questions and use the explanation to check your reasoning.

You can ask for help, draw on the thinking pad, or listen to the question and answer options. Progress distinguishes independent work from work completed with help.
