Let’s understand the idea.
- Every fraction names an amount of the stated original whole.
- Rename pieces without changing either original quantity; a common denominator need not be the smallest.
- Join or remove equal-sized pieces and check whether the result makes sense in the story.
Something to notice
Ask the learner to estimate a new fraction sum, model equal pieces and explain a whole exchange in a new subtraction. Accept pointing or dictation and record actual assistance and prior exposure; saved timing does not prove mental estimation.
Try it. Change it. Explain it.
Open the lesson to use its pictures and controls. In How it works, connect the picture to the idea. In Play & discover, change the quantities and notice what stays the same. In Your turn, answer questions and use the explanation to check your reasoning.
You can ask for help, draw on the thinking pad, or listen to the question and answer options. Progress distinguishes independent work from work completed with help.
