Let’s understand the idea.

  1. An expression records operations, not only their total.
  2. Keep the named sum or difference together in one group.
  3. Changing operand order is safe for addition and multiplication, but not generally for subtraction or division.

Something to notice

Ask the learner to invent a fresh situation for an expression, identify its grouped quantity, and explain why changing a group changes the situation. Listen for quantity meanings, not only a calculated total.

Try it. Change it. Explain it.

Open the lesson to use its pictures and controls. In How it works, connect the picture to the idea. In Play & discover, change the quantities and notice what stays the same. In Your turn, answer questions and use the explanation to check your reasoning.

You can ask for help, draw on the thinking pad, or listen to the question and answer options. Progress distinguishes independent work from work completed with help.
