Let’s understand the idea.

  1. Measure from zero and find the nearest whole-unit mark. A measurement need not end exactly on a mark.
  2. Keep one record for every object, even when two lengths match.
  3. An X above a length stands for one measurement. Stack matching measurements; keep the length scale equally spaced.

Something to notice

Observe children choosing physical objects, using a real ruler, recording each measurement and constructing their own labeled graphs. The built-in data sets and screen measurements are authored examples, not records of real children. Whole-unit measuring pictures avoid halfway ties. Picture keys and bar scales count by ones. Software can check the recorded values and graph counts; it does not assess physical measuring technique, handwriting, independent graph-title choices or oral explanations. Mapping and practiced counts do not establish mastery.
