Find the neighboring landmarks
Use neighboring multiples and distances to justify rounding.

Let’s understand the idea.
- Keep the original exact amount in view and name the requested unit.
- Find the neighboring multiples just below and above the original. Their gap is one requested unit.
- Compare the distance to each. Choose the nearer multiple; exactly halfway chooses the greater multiple.
- The line represents numerical distance. Changing the target changes its scale, not the original amount.
Something to notice
Ask the learner to explain the gap between the endpoints and trace both distances from the original. Try an example just below, at and just above a midpoint. Look for a distance explanation rather than choosing an endpoint because its label looks familiar.
Try it. Change it. Explain it.
Open the lesson to use its pictures and controls. In How it works, connect the picture to the idea. In Play & discover, change the quantities and notice what stays the same. In Your turn, answer questions and use the explanation to check your reasoning.
You can ask for help, draw on the thinking pad, or listen to the question and answer options. Progress distinguishes independent work from work completed with help.
