Between two ruler marks

Read length as the distance between a strip's two ends.

Let’s understand the idea.

  1. A ruler repeats equal length units. The labeled marks show distances from its zero mark.
  2. When the strip starts at zero, the end mark tells its length. Otherwise, subtract the starting mark from the ending mark.
  3. Count the spaces between marks. A strip from 0 to 7 is 7 units long, even though there are 8 marks including zero.

Something to notice

Ask the learner to select and use a real ruler, yardstick, meter stick or measuring tape for an appropriate object. Observe zero alignment, counting intervals, unit labels and end-to-end placement. The on-screen drawings are scaled representations, never actual-size rulers. Moving a ruler changes readings but not the object's length. Physical tool handling and independent explanations need observation.
