Same strip, different units

Measure the same length with larger and smaller units, and explain the different counts.

Let’s understand the idea.

  1. The strip stays the same length when we change the measuring unit.
  2. Smaller units fit more times along the strip. Larger units fit fewer times.
  3. A foot contains 12 inches. A meter contains 100 centimeters. Use the equal groups to connect each pair of measurements.

Something to notice

Measure the same physical object twice using different length units. Ask the learner to explain the relation between unit size and unit count. The paired scales are exact; drawings are not actual size. Meter/centimeter scales display ten-centimeter graduations, with a close-up showing the structure of one meter. Flexible transfer to other units and actual tool use need observation.
